Hi all, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably been looking for a way to update your iOS 4.3.5 to iOS 5.0 however you’ve also been receiving a silly error message that an unknown error occurred.
After reading many sources, I decided to try to update my iPhone by booting it into DFU mode and letting iTunes detect it.
What you will need:
- Uninstall any previous version of iTunes that is installed and restart your computer
- iTunes 10.5 – You should already have this. IF you don’t please download it
- Reboot your PC
- Connect the iPhone to your computer
- Enter DFU mode -
- Press the Power button [on top] until a message pops up on your phone to turn it off. Please side and turn off your phone.
- Press the Power and the Home button simultaneously for 10 seconds. Please make sure to countdown the 10 seconds.
- Release the Power button and keep pressing the home button until iTunes detects that your phone has connected in DFU mode
If all goes to plan, and more likely it will than not, you should have iOS 5.0 on your device in a short period of time..
I hope this guide was helpful and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Nick, I’ve tried these instructions on a new install and it has worked. I am unsure with why your phone is not working. However I think you may have already solved your problems by now.
